Granite countertops are a favorite choice for home interiors—and for good reason! They

are durable, unique, and add an instant touch of elegance to kitchen and bathroom spaces. However, because natural stone is naturally porous, keeping granite looking brand-new requires the right care routine.

Whether you’ve just installed new countertops or want to revive the shine on existing surfaces, follow these essential maintenance tips to protect your investment for years to come.

1. Wipe Up Spills Immediately

While granite is tough, it can absorb liquids if left standing too long. Acidic liquids like citrus juice, vinegar, wine, coffee, and oil are especially prone to causing dull spots or stains.

  • Pro Tip: Always blot spills with a soft cloth or paper towel immediately rather than wiping, which can spread the liquid across the surface.

2. Stick to Safe, Gentle Cleaners

When it comes to everyday wiping, less is more. Harsh chemical cleaners can strip away the sealant that protects your stone.

  • Do Use: Warm water, a mild dish soap, and a soft microfiber cloth. You can also use cleaners specifically formulated for natural stone.

  • Avoid: Ammonia, bleach, vinegar, lemon juice, or abrasive scrubbing sponges (like steel wool or scouring pads) that can etch or scratch the finish.

3. Test and Maintain Your Sealant

The secret to stain-resistant granite is a healthy sealant barrier. Most granite counters need to be resealed every 12 to 18 months, depending on usage and stone porosity.

  • The Water Drop Test: Drop a few beads of water onto your countertop. If the water beads up nicely, your seal is strong! If the water sinks into the stone within 10–15 minutes and creates a dark ring, it’s time to reseal.

4. Protect Surfaces from Heat and Scratches

Granite is remarkably heat resistant, but extreme, sudden temperature changes (thermal shock) can occasionally cause hairline cracks.

  • Always use trivets or hot pads under hot pots, pans, and slow cookers.

  • Use cutting boards instead of slicing directly on the stone—not only to protect the sealant, but also to prevent dulling your kitchen knives!

5. Buff for an Effortless Shine

After cleaning your countertops with warm, soapy water, wipe them down thoroughly with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. This quick step prevents water spots and leaves a streak-free, gleaming finish.

Keep Your Home Sparkling Without the Effort

Taking proper care of your granite surfaces doesn't have to be complicated—a few simple daily habits make all the difference. By using gentle products, sealing regularly, and wiping up spills quickly, your natural stone will retain its brilliant luster for decades.
